Why You Keep Stalling — And What’s Actually Getting in the Way
There’s a specific kind of frustration that brings people to me. It’s not the frustration of never having tried. It’s the frustration of having tried consistently, done most things right, and still not getting the return the effort should be producing.
They’re not beginners. They understand training. They know what progressive overload means, they eat reasonably well, they’re not dramatically under-sleeping. And yet something keeps going wrong. Progress stalls. An injury appears. Energy drops. The thing that was working stops working, and they can’t identify why.
In my experience, this pattern almost always has a structural explanation. Not a motivational one.
The gap between effort and adaptation
Training produces results through a specific mechanism: you apply a stress, your body recovers from that stress, and in recovering it adapts to handle a similar stress more effectively in future. That mechanism requires three things to work — an appropriate stimulus, adequate recovery, and a physiological environment capable of completing the adaptation process.
Most people who are stuck have one of those three things significantly compromised. Usually it’s the third one, and usually they don’t know it.
The physiological environment that adaptation requires is more specific than most training advice acknowledges. Sleep needs to be deep enough and consistent enough to allow the hormonal and tissue repair processes that training adaptation depends on. The inflammatory load the body is managing needs to be low enough that the repair and recovery systems have capacity to respond to training stress rather than spending their resources elsewhere. The nervous system needs to be spending enough time in parasympathetic dominance — the recovery state — to actually complete the adaptation cycle rather than just accumulating fatigue.
When any of these conditions are chronically compromised, effort goes in and very little comes back out. The training is appropriate. The intention is genuine. The environment for adaptation isn’t there.
What chronic compromise actually looks like
It doesn’t look like burnout. It doesn’t look like overtraining in the dramatic sense. It looks like this: sessions that feel harder than the numbers justify. Recovery that’s slower than it used to be. A baseline energy level that’s lower than it should be given the amount of sleep being obtained. Joint stiffness that takes longer than a day to clear. Progress that comes in short bursts and then stalls for reasons that aren’t obvious.
These are dull signals, not sharp ones. And people who are good at pushing through — which describes almost everyone I work with — are very good at not hearing dull signals. They adjust their expectations rather than investigating the cause. They try harder. They change the programme. They add sessions. None of which addresses the actual problem.
The actual problem is usually one or more of a relatively small set of factors: sleep architecture that isn’t producing adequate deep sleep, food intolerances creating a background inflammatory response that training compounds rather than resolves, a total stress load — training plus life — that exceeds current recovery capacity, movement dysfunction that means certain exercises are causing damage rather than adaptation, or some combination of these working together.
Why sequencing matters
The most important thing the assessment process establishes is not what’s wrong but what needs to happen first. These are different questions and the distinction matters.
Most people who come to me have multiple things that need addressing. The temptation — and the approach most programmes take — is to address them simultaneously. Change the training, change the nutrition, change the sleep habits, address the movement dysfunction, all at once. In theory this is efficient. In practice it makes it impossible to identify what’s working, creates an overwhelming change burden that breaks down under life pressure, and frequently produces short-term results followed by complete regression when one element of the system fails.
The assessment tells me which factor is most limiting the system right now. That factor gets addressed first, with everything else supporting it. Once it’s stable, the next limiting factor becomes addressable. The progress is slower in the first few weeks than a dramatic overhaul would produce, and faster and more durable over months and years.
The pattern I see most consistently
Across the clients I work with, the single most common limiting factor is recovery capacity — specifically, a system that’s been running in a low-grade stressed state for long enough that it’s lost the ability to shift adequately into the parasympathetic recovery state that adaptation requires.
This shows up in HRV data that trends low and doesn’t respond well to training load. It shows up in sleep that’s adequate in duration but poor in depth. It shows up in resting heart rate that doesn’t come down overnight the way it should. It shows up in a subjective sense of never quite feeling recovered regardless of how much rest is taken.
The fix isn’t rest alone. Passive rest doesn’t restore a system that’s stuck in sympathetic dominance — it just removes the training stimulus without addressing the underlying state. The fix is a combination of deliberate recovery inputs, reduction in total load to a level the system can actually absorb, and time. Not a long time — usually four to eight weeks of appropriate work produces a measurable shift. But the shift has to happen before building on top of it makes sense.
What changes when the limiting factor is addressed
The clients I’ve seen make the most dramatic and sustained progress aren’t the ones who trained hardest or changed the most at once. They’re the ones who were willing to address the actual limiting factor first, even when that meant doing less than they wanted to in the short term.
When the recovery environment is right, training adaptation becomes almost automatic. The same effort that was previously producing frustration starts producing results. Sessions feel appropriately hard rather than disproportionately hard. Recovery between sessions becomes reliable. Progress compounds rather than stalling every few weeks.
This isn’t a new training philosophy. It’s a more accurate application of how adaptation actually works. Your body will do what it’s designed to do — adapt, improve, get stronger and more capable — if the conditions for that process are in place.
